SCOUT Organic Active Beauty - Clean Beauty: What Makes Our Nail Polish Collection a Healthy Choice

Clean Beauty: What Makes Our Nail Polish Collection a Healthy Choice

SCOUT is a clean-healthy beauty choice – it’s our core value and not a marketing claim.

At SCOUT, we do not play the ‘5, 10, 13 or 100 Free from’ game and prefer instead to focus on the benefits of our beautiful products.

However, we are often asked about nail polish brands that claim to be ‘free from nasty ingredients" and today would like to explain what a clean beauty brand really means.

What is the difference between 5, 7, 10, 13, or 100 free nail polish?

Very little or none.

There are little if any discernible differences between nail polishes claiming to be ‘5, 7, 10, 13  or more Free’ when looking at the formulations and considering the exclusion of ingredients that may be thought of as potentially harmful based on substantive clinical studies on human subjects, such as Formaldehyde, DBP, Toulene, Formaldehyde Resin, and Camphor.

The names 7, 10, or 13 Free are not an indicator of how many chemicals have been removed from a nail polish formulation to make them healthier.

In fact, if a brand has removed some of the ingredients in the above list, we would question why they were used in the first place.

For example, it has been claimed that 7 Free is better than 5 Free because 7 Free excludes Ethyl Tosylamide and Xylene. This is incorrect.

Many other leading nail polish brands do not contain such ingredients (xylene or ethyl tosylamide or Rosin or Nickle) and either never have or have not for many years due to their potential adverse effects on health.

Similarly, claims of nail polish being 10 Free and this is better than 5 Free or 7 Free is also incorrect.

10-Free nail polishes typically make general claims that they do not contain or have removed preservatives such as parabens or fragrances and animal ingredients.

These claims are also incorrect. For example, there are no preservatives in nail polish. It does not contain water and never has needed a preservative.
