Cleansing is an important first step in a winter skincare routine, but your usual cleanser may suddenly leave your skin feeling tighter than normal. We often blame a moisturiser and think it is ineffective and not properly hydrating our complexion when in fact a simple change to a crème cleanser from a foaming or wash off cleanser will quickly sort out that feeling of dryness.
I recommend using a cream-based cleanser in Winter. Use it in the morning as well as in the evening. Sometimes you can even leave it on for a few minutes and then gently wash off.
The first and most important line of defence for your skin in Winter is a proper winter moisturiser. Choosing the best moisturiser for Winter can feel a little daunting at first, but it's pretty straightforward once you know what you're looking for.
A Winter moisturiser performs multiple functions to hydrate, nourish and protect your skin. First of all, let's talk product texture. In summer, as the skin absorbs moisture from the environment, it sweats more, and we usually use lighter, lotion-based moisturisers since that's enough to keep the skin hydrated.
However, winter is a whole other situation, and lotion- based moisturisers won't cut it most of the time. What you want is a rich cream which is the best choice for the low-humidity season.
Creams contain emollients and usually oils. What do they do? Emollients help soothe, soften, and increase moisture levels, improve skin barrier function. Oils nourish and form a layer on the skin. This way, they physically block water from escaping.
A common myth is that rich creams are comedogenic and clog pores, but today that's no longer true in most cases. However, it is not all about being thicker. Of more importance are the actives contained in the cream.
